Whitney Houston and Dana Bash

Whitney Elizabeth Houston was born to a musical family on 9 August 1963. She was born in Newark New Jersey the daughter of gospel star Cissy Houston (nee Emily Lee Drinkard) and John Russell Houston Jr. and cousin of singer Dionne Warwick. Her mother and she started singing professionally at the New Hope Baptist Church in Newark at the age of fifteen years old. They sang the backing vocals for Chaka Khans 1978 track Im Every Woman. The singer went on to sing back vocals to Jermaine and Lou Rawls as well as her own mother and was briefly models for the front cover of Seventeen magazine in 1981. In 1981, she began to work as a vocalist in the New York funk group Material. It was her quality vocal performance with this group that caught interest of recording label including Arista. In 1985, Whitney Houston's debut album turned out to be one of the most successful debut albums of all time. The album contained several hit songs including How Will I know You're Good to Me, Saving All My Love For you and The greatest Love of All. It helped her achieve seven US charts-topping singles in a row and beat the Beatles. The album sold 3 million copies its first year, as well as 25 million around the world. The album won her first six Grammy Awards.
